STS-41G

STS-51A >

The STS-41G crew wore the standard AB Emblem embroidered mission emblems on their flight suits and on their in-flight clothing, thus there is no rare 'crew patch' for this mission.

It is noteworthy that the STS-41G mission saw the introduction of the first add-on name tab, something that became a feature of many Shuttle missions that followed. This was required because additional crew members (in this case two payload specialists) were assigned to the mission after the mission insignia had been designed.

Because the core part of the insignia remained unchanged patch manufacturers who had already begun to produce mission patches at this point were able to re-use the patch bodies by producing separate tabs that could be glued and sewn to the bottom of the bodies. Manufacturers who had not yet begun their production runs before the crew change, as was apparently the case for Lion Brothers, were able to take a different approach and manufacture single piece patches with the name tab incorporated.

This is the only version of the patch where the names are executed in upper case, and is also noteworthy for the fact that the background colour behind the names in the tab area is different to that used behind the names in the main body.
