NASA Contractor Patches

Recovery >

During the peak years of activity on the Apollo program NASA's prime contractors for the construction of the Apollo Command Modules (North American Rockwell) and Lunar Modules (Grumman) employed thousands of people to work on these projects.

In some cases the companies had embroidered patches produced as mementos for their employees. In other cases smaller teams within these companies had their own patches produced to commemorate the particular role they were playing in mankind's greatest adventure.

Since these contractor patches were generally manufactured in small numbers and given exclusively to select groups of employees they are often both rare and highly sought by collectors today.

Below I have tried to list some of the better known NASA contractor patches from the Apollo era as well as some of the rarer patches that are worth looking out for.

These lists will doubtless be expanded as more patches are identified, so please feel free to contact me with details of any patches you feel should be included here.

Grumman Embroidered Patches

Patch id:

Grumman Logo patch variant 1

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman employees.
Dimensions: Body 3" / 76mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue twill. Stitched border with cut edge.
Scarcity: Scarce.
Value: Unknown.
Notes: This appears to be a distinct variant of the regular Grumman logo patch. The Grumman text and most other details are distinctly more bold than in the regular version.
Patch id:

Grumman Logo patch variant 2

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman employees.
Dimensions: Body 2.7" / 68mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue linen. Stitched border with cut edge.
Scarcity: Scarce.
Value: An example sold recently for $35.75 [1]
Notes:

This is another variant of the Grumman logo patch, embroidered on a blue linen-like cloth backing rather than the usual twill.

This particular version of the Grumman logo patch seems to match that worn by the Grumman employees at KSC in this image taken prior to the Apollo 13 launch in 1970.

Patch id:

Grumman text back patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman employees.
Dimensions: 7¾ x 2½" / 197 x 64mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Scarce.
Value: An example sold recently for $51 [2]
Notes:

This oversize patch bearing the company name was worn on the back of overalls by Grumman employees at the Bethpage plant and at the KSC.

Patch id:

Grumman Lunar Module patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman LM team.
Dimensions: Approx 4" / 101mm
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Very rare. Two examples sold in last year.
Value: The most recent example sold for $152.50[3].
Notes: This rare vintage patch is an embroidered version of the Grumman Lunar Module insignia which is more often seen as a decal.
Patch id:

Grumman Lunar Module KSC patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman LM KSC team
Dimensions: 3¼" / 84mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: Examples sold in recent years have fetched between $50 and $259[4].
Notes:

At its peak, Grumman's team at the Kennedy Space Center was around 1,400 strong. It's not clear when exactly this patch was produced but it's likely that a significant portion of those employees received one of these patches.

This image taken prior to the Apollo 13 launch in 1970, shows one of these patches being worn by a Grumman employee at KSC.

This patch exists in two distinct forms, one embroidered on dark blue twill and the other on slightly lighter blue twill ( see example ). This is probably just the result of two separate production runs as the design is otherwise identical.

Both forms of the patch are rare but the lighter blue versions seems to be the scarcer of the two.

Patch id:

Grumman LM Ground Support patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman LM Ground Support team.
Dimensions: Approx. 4" / 101mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Extremely rare.
Value: Unknown.
Notes: At its peak the Grumman Lunar Module Ground Support team at Bethpage numbered around 600 but I've only seen one example of this striking fully-embroidered patch sold to-date.
Patch id:

Grumman LM Ground Support patch variant?

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: Approx. 3½" / 89mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'
Scarcity: Unknown.
Value: Unknown.
Notes: Only one example of the patch has been seen to-date[5] and since this was sold alongside some modern replica versions of rare patches it seemed at first that this was also a modern copy. However, more detailed images seem to show that might be a vintage patch after all.

The poorly-excecuted design, particularly the thread color transition on the hand, and the odd combination of 2D LM on a 3D hand would seem to indicate that if this patch is vintage then it was likely a first draft or prototype for the more successful version shown on the left.

I still find the fill thread pattern apparent on parts of this patch, particularly the palm of the hand, to have a distinctly modern appearance so I have strong doubts as to its real age.

Patch id:

Grumman Astronaut-Pilot Team patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman.
Dimensions: 4½ x 2½" / 114 x 64mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Rare.
Value: Unknown.
Notes: This patch was used on work coveralls worn at Grumman's Bethpage plant by some staff and by visiting astronauts, as shown in this photo.
Patch id:

Grumman Astronaut-Pilot Team back patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman.
Dimensions: 8¾ x 5" / 222 x 127mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'
Scarcity: Rare.
Value: An example sold for $115[6]
Notes: This patch is a larger version of that on the left, and was worn on the backs of coveralls, as shown in this photo.

Patch id:

Grumman LM-1 APOLLO-5 patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Grumman LM-1 team.
Dimensions: 4 1/8" / 104mm
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: Examples have sold in recent years for between $79 and $438[7].
Notes: This rare vintage patch celebrates the first test flight of a Lunar Module, LM-1 aboard Apollo 5. It may have been produced by one of the Grumman team based at the KSC.
Patch id:

Grumman LM-1 APOLLO-5 replica patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: AB Emblem
Distribution: Available exclusively from my Crew Patches store.
Dimensions: 4 1/8" / 104mm
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Limited production run.
Value: On sale at $15
Notes: This is a high quality replica of the rare Grumman LM-1 / APOLLO-5 patch, produced for me by AB Emblem in early 2012.

These patches are not available via regular retail outlets, or from AB Emblem directly. If you want to purchase one or more of these patches please go to the Crew Patches Store page.

Patch id:

Grumman LM-1 APOLLO-5 Randy Hunt replica patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Likely Randy Hunt
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: Approx 4"
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Unknown
Value: Unknown
Notes: This replica of the original LM-1 patch can be readily identified by the missing dash in the "LM-1" lettering and the "APOLLO 5" text which has apparently been executed as "APOLLO S".
It was apparently produced by Randy Hunt (4gator).

Patch id:

LM3 patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: Approx 3⅓ x 3½" / 85 x 87mm
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: One example sold recently for $725[8].
Notes: This patch celebrates the first manned flight of a Lunar Module, LM-3 as part of the Apollo 9 mission. It appears to be a vintage patch, and although the rather crude design does not form part of the series of LM insignias produced by the Grumman teams working at Bethpage it may possibly have been produced by a Grumman employee based at the KSC.
Patch id:

LM3 replica patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Randy Hunt
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: Unknown
Type: Fully embroidered. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Unknown
Value: Unknown
Notes: This replica of the LM3 patch, apparently produced by Randy Hunt (4gator), can be readily identified by the orange background.

Patch id:

Oval Snoopy patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: 3 x 4½" / 75 x 114mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Rare. 4 examples sold in 2010.
Value: Examples have sold in recent years for between $21 and $128[9].
Notes:

This Snoopy patch was apparently sold to the general public but is usually associated with Grumman as it appears to have been presented by the company to its employees as part of the Manned Flight Awareness program.

This version is a regular oval patch with the detail of the design embroidered onto white twill, but it also exists as a trimmed version.

This oval version is frequently seen with staining in the lower area from the glue used to hold the tail in place on the reverse.

Patch id:

Cut Snoopy patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: 2¼ x 3¾" / 58 x 94mm
Type: Fully embroidered on black twill. Stitched border with cut edge.
Scarcity: Very rare. Only one example sold in 2010.
Value: Examples have sold for $36 to $100[9].
Notes: This patch has the same basic Snoopy design as the oval version but it has been fully-embroidered onto black twill then trimmed around the design. It appears to be far more rare than the oval version.

North American Aviation Inc. / North American Rockwell embroidered patches

North American Aviation Inc. produced the Apollo Command/Service Modules and the second stage (S-II) of the Saturn V rocket. After merging with Rockwell-Standard in 1967 (shortly after the Apollo 1 fire) the company became known as North American Rockwell. The old NAA logo continued to be used for some time but patches bearing the NAA name probably date from early 1967 at the latest. The company then became Rockwell International in 1973 so the NAR name was only in use from 1967 to 1973.

Below I detail some NAA & NAR patches directly related to the space program plus a fewmore generic company patches which were nevertheless used by people working on the Apollo program.

Patch id:

North American Aviation S&ID NASA Project Apollo patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAA S&ID team
Dimensions: 8½" x 8" / 216 x 203mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: An example sold recently for $84[10]
Notes: This is an oversize patch for the NAA Space & Information Division for NASA's Project Apollo. Presumably intended for use on the back of coveralls, and likely produced at the same time as the other similar back patches shown here.
Patch id:

North American Aviation Apollo CSM patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAA
Dimensions: 8" x 10" / 203 x 254mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: An example sold recently for $190[11]
Notes: This is an oversize patch for the NAA Apollo Command and Service Module project, combining an 8" circular section with an 8 x 2" rectangle. Like the other patches in this section it was presumably intended for use on the back of coveralls.
Patch id:

North American Aviation oversize logo patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAA
Dimensions: roughly 10 x 9" / 254 x 229mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Cut edge.
Scarcity: Uncommon.
Value: An example sold recently for $69[12]
Notes: This is an oversize generic NAA logo patch intended for use on the back of coveralls. The central triangle measures 8" across athe base and 7" high. Although not exclusively linked to the space program it was likely produced at the same time as the project-specific patches detailed above and was worn by those working on NAA's space projects, usually with the North American Rockwell text logo underneath, as shown in these photos.
Patch id:

North American Aviation S&ID Saturn S-II patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAA S&ID team
Dimensions: 8" / 203mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: No example sales to base estimate on.
Notes: This is an oversize patch for the NAA Space & Information Division for the S-II, the second stage of the Saturn V rocket. Presumably intended for use on the back of coveralls.
Patch id:

North American Aviation logo patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAA
Dimensions: 3 x 2¾" / 76 x 70mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Uncommon.
Value: An example sold recently for $57[13]
Notes: This is a generic NAA logo patch. Not exclusively linked to the space program but it was likely produced at the same time as the project-specific patches detailed above and was worn on the coveralls of those working on NAA's space projects, and occasionally by visiting astronauts, as shown in this photo of the Apollo 7 crew.
Patch id:

North American Rockwell text back patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAR
Dimensions: roughly 13 x 1¾" / 330 x 44mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge with tail.
Scarcity: Uncommon.
Value: An example sold recently for $36[14]
Notes: This large North American Rockwell text patch was intended for use on the back of coveralls and was commonly worn underneath the large NAA patch detailed above, as shown in these photos.
Patch id:

North American Rockwell logo & text back patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to NAR
Dimensions: 10⅛ x 8" / 257 x 203mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge with tail.
Scarcity: Uncommon.
Value: An example sold recently for $60[15]
Notes: This large North American Rockwell logo and text patch was used on the back of coveralls. Similar patches are shown in these photos but it should be noted that the fill pattern visible in the logo on some of these examples consists of curved lines whereas the example shown above has horizontal lines of fill thread. Thus there must be at least two variants of this patch.
Patch id:

North American Rockwell Apollo Launch Team KSC patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Limited to Rockwell team
Dimensions: Approx 3½" / 89mm
Type: Partially embroidered on black twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Rare. Four examples sold in the last year.
Value: Examples sold in the last year fetched between $222 and $362[17].
Notes: This is a rare and much sought-after patch from the company responsible for the Command and Service Modules.
Patch id:

North American Rockwell Apollo Launch Team KSC patch replica?

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Unknown
Dimensions: Approx 3½" / 89mm
Type: Fully embroidered? Merrowed edge with 'tail'.
Scarcity: Unknown
Value: Unknown
Notes: The seller of this patch believed it to be a vintage original, although a different version to the one shown on the left. It's certainly a good reproduction of the original design, although this one appears to have a fully-embroidered background. My own feeling is that it is a replica.

It's actually very difficult to judge the age of a patch. The lack of a plastic coating on the back does not prove age, as replicas can be made without one. Such copies were made on demand in the 80s and 90s by sellers such as Randy Hunt.

Personally I find the fill style visible in the white areas of thread to be very modern looking.

Patch id:

North American Rockwell Apollo Landing/Safing Team patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to Rockwell ALST team
Dimensions: 9 x 5½" / 228 x 140mm
Type: Partially embroidered on blue cloth. Merrowed edge without 'tail' (selvedged).
Scarcity: Extremely rare.
Value: No example sales to base estimate on.
Notes: This is an oversize patch presumably intended for use on the back of coveralls.

Chrysler Corporation Embroidered Patches

Patch id:

Chrysler Saturn 1B patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to Chrysler S1B team
Dimensions: Approx 11 x 8" / 279 x 203mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: An example sold recently for $150[18].
Notes: This oversize patch was presumably for use on the back of coveralls of the Chrysler technicians working on the Saturn 1B booster.
Patch id:

Chrysler Space Division patch

Worn by crew? No.
Flown? No.
Manufacturer: Unknown
Distribution: Likely limited to Chrysler Space Division
Dimensions: 4¾ x 1½" / 121 x 38mm
Type: Partially embroidered on white twill. Merrowed edge.
Scarcity: Very rare.
Value: No examples to base estimate on.
Notes: This patch was used on the coveralls of the Chrysler technicians working on the Saturn 1B booster.
